Upon reaching the Delta Senior School, I was confident yet a bit nervous of socialising with the people there. As we walked into the school, the cheerful students there gave us a warm welcome by greeting us with a J. Their actions made me feel that they are not any different from us. They greeted and smiled at us even though they did not know us then, in which not many of us would do. As we headed to their school field, some of the students stood right in front of us to just give a wave. Although it was not a usual thing for someone to do, I felt really welcomed and this made me realise that by just giving someone a simple action, it can really make your day. From then on, I started giving handshakes to the students there and making new friends.

The best thing that happened to me was something that was insignificant to others. I was playing a game of floorball at first and the students there were really enjoying themselves and having fun. While I was trying to clear the ball with my stick, I lost grip and my stick dropped on the floor. As I was trying to pick it up, one of the students actually grabbed the stick before me and passed it back to me. I was really touched by her action and this made me realise what good have I done to other people on the court when I play floorball in school. However, the worst thing that happened to me during the trip was when I accidentally tripped one of the students there while playing a game of football. As I tried to offer a help by sticking my hand out to him, he got up by himself and continued playing. His actions made me feel that although sometimes people may not appreciate your help, life goes on and you just have to be well-aware that you did the right thing.

In the near future, I would really love to involve myself in such community service events as it has really thought me lessons that cannot be attained from school. However, I would like to participate in different kinds of activities so that the lessons learned can vary. From this service-learning trip, I have learned to not be judgemental of the people around me and sometimes, there are many more kind people that we have yet to know around us.

Honestly, when I first heard that our service learning project was to visit the
kids at delta senior school, I was feeling like 'okay this is easy'. However, when we reached the place, I started to feel nervous as I did not know what to expect or how the students will react to us.

At first glance, they look normal and and all of the thoughts of them being maybe too 'passionate' was dismissed when we started to play sports with them. They showed alot of energy and passion for the game and you could see that they were having lots of fun. Although we were giving in to them, I feel that we might not beat them even if we played at our best. Haha.

In overall, I think that it is a good experience as I never had the chance to interact with these autistic kids and it really widen my spectrum towards people like them who could all have very gifted talents. I had a lot of fun and i would love to visit them again.

For this year`s service learning project, our class decided to go to Delta Senior High School. When I heard the news at first i seriously thought that it was a stupid idea. But after pictures and stories from Ms Sheikha,I was really looking forward for the trip.Firstly, seeing and interacting with mentally disabled students would be a first for me and I was looking forward to make new friends and teaching them sports.Secondly,I did not know how they would react upon seeing us.And lastly,I wanted to have fun.

When we went to the school,we saw many students and they did not look any different from us.I volunteered to play football and during my football match with them, all the players from Delta Senior School took instructions from their coach and captain and did not argue. Their cooperation showed on the pitch as well. This made me realise how petty my friends and I can sometimes be and how we should really change this side of us.In the end we lost to them by a big margain.

The most memorable experience from the trip was when I got my first serious injury.During the football match,a player from the opposing team caught me suddenly with a powerful shot that stuck my palm hard. This actually caused a radius fracture on my left hand. But apart from this injury,I had a wonderful and a fruitful trip.

For service learning this year, my class decided to work with Delta Senior School. The plan was to go to the school and play sports with them, namely football(in picture above), floorball and basketball. I was really excited to play with the students there, and it was genuinely an enjoyable trip. The students played a whole lot better than I would have imagined, and it left me in awe. I really feel that the students in such schools should not be mocked or discriminated. They indeed have something truly special about them and also are a part of our community.

What stood out for me was the way they communicated with each other. They did not argue. During my football match with them, all the players from Delta Senior School took instructions from their coach and captain and did not argue. Their cooperation showed on the pitch as well. This made me realise how petty my friends and I can sometimes be and how we should really change this side of us.

I would surely stay involved with community service, as I have a soft spot for helping those in need, even if it's just a greeting and small talk. It was really fun and I hope we do it again someday.
