When I heard that our class were going to The Delta Senior School for our Character Education assignment on community service, I was quite excited, yet nervous at the same time, as I imagined the students there to be very rowdy and uncivilized. However, that changed when I reached the school. Many of the students there looked exactly like us, and all of them were very friendly , waving their hands or saying hello to us. I realized that I was very fortunate to be a normal kid, to be born without any defects. From then onwards, I always looked on the brighter side of things, and had a positive view of life.

During our time there, we had to play games with them, and teach them those games at the same time. However, many of the students were already expert players, and we had a great time playing against them. I was playing soccer , and even though I received a few hard tackles from those determined students , I still had fun. At first , we didn't think that the autistic students would pose much of a challenge to us, but in the end, we were completely obliterated on the pitch, and lost by a score of 3-2. But the score was the last thing on my mind. That day, I had made new friends and had a lot of fun competing with them. Never judge a book by its cover! Even though they were autistic, they still gave us a great challenge, and I think that we should learn from them, having perseverance and superb determination. Their never-say-die spirit really inspired me.

After this experience, a huge sense of pride and admiration coursed through me as I had made an impact on these people, as they had on me. The satisfaction of doing a good deed is also immense and irreplaceable. I would most definitely be involved in community work, as they sense of achievement is great, and also that we should give back to the community in one way or another.

Idk wat subject to write!

When we were told that we were going to visit the Delta Senior School for our service learning, I was quite excited and was looking forward to it. It was the first time I was going to experience how was it like to mix around with the authestic people. It made me feel even more eager to meet them when Ms Sheika told us that they were friendly and kind and was not like most of us would expected it to be. Fortunately, it turned out to be true and those people were amazing to play with.

We split ourselves into three different sports and played against them. I was suprised when I saw some of those guys played better football than us. It totally changed my thinking about them being less priviledge in terms of sports. Their determination to win the game and teamwork impressed me a lot and that totally made me feel ashamed when I think about my team's disappointing performance and poor attitude to win this year! Those were one of the things i picked up from them during the trip there.

In years to come, I would still want to be involved in the community as I feel it is important for us to know that in life not everyone is as lucky as us.

In my opinion, the purpose of going to Delta Senior School was to interact with the students there. I had no idea how they wold be like as it was my first time there. At first, i thought they were a bunch of autistic students. When we arrived at the Delta Senior School, we saw the students there and it really changed how i viewed them. They are more similar to us than they are different and for that reason, i looked forward to playing with them.

In this service learning, we played soccer, floorball and basketball with them. We only taught them the fundamentals of how to play the respective games but that did not stop them from playing the best they could. We watched them play the different sports and their determination was clearly seen while they were playing. This was one of their strong points and i think that anyone can learn from their actions.

In future, I would like to participate in activities involving people like those from the Delta Senior School. I think we can learn one or two new things from these people. Even though we did teach them how to play the respective games, they taught us to be determined, focused and to persevere.

My service learning has definitely been an enriching and enjoyable experience. I've learnt how kids who were born much less fortunate than I am who still have a positive outlook on life. This has really made me realize how much complaining I have made over minor things. My best moment was when I was able to talk to a student there (in the picture above) who seemed just like any one of us. She could converse well, co-ordinate movements but the only flaw was that she was socially awkward and suffered from a mild down syndrome which affected her physical appearance. I've learnt of her daily routines which comprised of a 5.45am wake time, going to Kallang Stadium to clean up and then going back to school for lessons. I certainly have great admiration for her as she enjoys going to work even though its having to clean up after people. And here we are looking at cleaners as the bottom of the working table. What do we know? We're much more fortunate than she is but she's satisfied with the little she has and even more excited for what is due to come for her. The worst moment for me was getting a few hard knocks around while we were having a friendly game of basketball. At first sight, I didn't expect much from them. I even thought of giving them chance, however, they definitely proved me wrong when they thrashed us in the first round and I never expected any hard knocks as they looked much weaker than me. From there I've learnt not to underestimate these kids as they do have special talents just like us. Do not judge a book by its cover! Having visited old folks' homes, orphanages and schools for children with special needs, I've gained much knowledge and experience of things which can't be learnt in the classroom. There's this sense of satisfaction and pride when I know I've impacted someone's life positively. Thus, I definitely see myself doing more community work in the future!

Initially when i was told that were going to visit the Delta Senior School for Autistic kids, i was quite nervous. I had never met an autistic person before and thus i was a little apprehensive of the idea. I expected them to be pretty different and uncivilized. But in a matter of minutes of reaching the school, my view of them totally changed. They were very pleased to make us their acquaintance and were gracious hosts. They quickly learned the basics of three different games: floorball, football and basketball. It was fun to introduce them to new games and play with them.

I played floorball with them and sincerely had a great time. We mixed ourselves into two teams and played against each other. It was a spectacular experience as they were quick learners and showed some great skill. It was shocking as i did not expect them to comprehend the rules and technique of the game so quickly. But i think we ended up having a good time playing with each other and learning from each other as well. I learnt that i should never judge anyone before meeting them.

I definitely see myself being involved in the community in the future as i would love to do as much as i can for the less fortunate and render services to the best of my abilities. I believe that we need to give back to the community in any way we can to show them our gratitude.

At first, i was quite nervous and scared when we were told to visit the Delta Senior School as I thought the students would be like a bunch of rowdy and noisy students like what i see on the public transport every day. However, upon reaching there, i was forced to eat my own words as they totally changed my perspective of autistic students. It was definitely an eye-opener experience then.

Immediately, we separate ourselves into three groups: football, basketball and floorball. It was an enjoyable experience as i played football with the kids there who were much more competitive than i thought. Their determination and competitiveness were clearly shown when they even had a P.E.teacher who stood by the side guiding them during the game while their teammates encouraged them! Their desire is something we can definitely learn from them.

After this experience, i definitely feel that i can contribute to the community in the future by participating in such events which involve having fun with them. Lastly,i also do believe that all of us who made our way there, had a fruitful journey as we definitely learnt something from them. :)
