Darren Pua 3C (02)

I was surprised when I first heard that my class was going to Delta Senior School (DSS) for our service learning project. I did not know what to expect, in terms of the behaviours and mentalities of the students there. I heard from my seniors ,who went to DSS before, that it was a memorable experience and that given another chance, they would definitely love to go back there. i was actually keen on going to DSS to experience their completely different styles of learning that takes place there.

When we arrived at DSS, it was actually drizzling. There was a moment when i felt down because i thought we could not play games and interact with the students there due to the shortage of available facilities. When i took my first steps into the school, i was astonished by how friendly and sociable they were, completely different from what i made them out to be. Many of them came up to us to greet us and shake hands with us. They were even friendlier than we were! After a while, the rain subsided. We could play soccer at the field, floorball and basketball at the sheltered basketball court. Before we started on our games, i felt a pang of excitement. I had a wonderful time playing and interacting with them.

These amazing people amused me with their optimism towards life. Although they suffered from autism, they took it positively and continued to live their lives to the fullest. When we played basketball, they were losing to us at first. What struck me the most was that they were undeterred by the score. Their eyes were filled with determination. They were not about to give up. They fought on hard and emerged victorious in the end. Although it was just a friendly game, they played to their fullest. This was the spirit of a true sportsman, and being a sportsman is one of our school values.

This trip to DSS changed my perspective towards life. i learnt to be more positive towards life and to live life to the fullest. This trip left a memory etched in my heart and in the future, i would definately be more than happy to contribute to the community.
