As I heard that my class was to go to Delta Senior School for our service learning project, I did not really know how to react. Part of me was excited after hearing how another batch of students a few years back enjoyed themselves when they were there. However, a part of me was nervous as I did not know what to expect from the students there who were autistic and I never really had the chance to interact to with autistic people before. I have always thought that they were unfortunate as to be born at a disadvantage but it was nice to see them living life to their utmost. It was raining when we arrived but the weather did not at one moment affect the spirits of the excited students. Most of them looked like ordinary people even though they needed a little bit of assistance. At the end of the trip, I have a newfound respect for them as they help me see the better side of life.
Our task was to actually teach them the fundamental techniques of playing football, floorball and basketball. So we separated into our respective groups and got to work. I was in the group that was supposed to teach them football. The students who played with us were gearing up when we arrived and proceeded to welcome us to their school. Before the game, it was obvious that both groups were nervous, so everyone was introduced to one another. As soon as the game started, I came to know they already had knowledge of how to play football. I have to say, some of them were really skillful players. It was fun playing with them, sometimes being awestruck at how several of them were fluid in their play. We ended up losing the game but in the end, the score did not matter as we all bonded together really well. Their spirit was really special and it was admiring to see them determine to play with their hearts out. Knowing the other groups also had a lot of fun made the trip all the more enjoyable.
In the end, overall, I think we all came back with a lot of memories that will be engraved in our hearts and new knowledge to keep. Everyone did their task with a sincere heart and satisfied with our achievement that day. I feel I will be participating in community work, as it is one of the way of giving back to people who sacrificed for the sake of others.
